All day, Friday 15 March 2019

Place: Main Building, Cardiff University, Cardiff.

What do ‘impact’ and ‘engagement’ really mean in the social sciences?  What is involved in collaborating with a non-academic organisation during a PhD, and what can be learnt from this? Is it always a good thing? What are the potential gains, and who benefits?

This event will answer these and similar questions, and will address such matters through the use of real examples, weaving together the practical and conceptual. The day includes illustrated talks and discussions, led by social scientists with direct experience of collaboration, engagement and impact, including:

  • Rachel Aldred (Reader at Westminster University and winner of the 2016 ESRC prize for outstanding impact on public policy);
  • Dawn Mannay (School of Social Sciences, Cardiff University);
  • Bruce Etherington (Impact Acceleration Account Manager, Cardiff University)
  • Danlu Cen (ESRC Postdoctoral Fellow, School of Psychology, Cardiff University)
  • David James (Director, ESRC Wales Doctoral Training Partnership, and Chair of the UK REF2021 Education sub-panel)

View the programme.

It will be held in Cardiff University. If your home institution is Aberystwyth, Bangor, Gloucestershire or Swansea Universities, we are able to organise accommodation on the night of 14 March and will reimburse reasonable costs of travel. If you require accommodation please contact the Wales DTP by 15 February.
