Research pathway:
Management and Business
Host institution:
Cardiff University

Building on his doctoral thesis and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS、日本学術振興会) postdoc studies, Joey Soehardjojo is undertaking research at ESRC Cardiff Business School.

The ESRC research project consolidates his doctoral and JSPS studies while developing new insights into the impacts of tripartite arrangements among quasi-government agencies, business associations and research institutions at the meso-institutional level.

Specifically, he examines how industrial relations actors shape cross-border management practice transfer processes and business policy development in emerging market economies. His empirical research examines the context, coordination and role of these actors in addressing sociopolitical economic changes and institutional constraints. Focusing on global automakers facing intense competition in the global automotive supply chain, the research investigates the effect of both the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and Official Development Assistance (ODA) policies on the development of cross-border business environment and human resources. Furthermore, this research expands our understanding of the implications of tripartite arrangements in mitigating the institutional changes, constraints and uncertainty of both the MNC home- and subsidiary host-countries.

Joey Soehardjojo holds a Ph.D. from Warwick Business School, UK. His main focus is the diffusion processes and implications of MNC cross-border management practices in the emerging market economies of Southeast Asia. Based on large-scale qualitative data—including car, motorcycle and auto parts manufacturers, his work lies between the research streams of International Management, Employment Relations and Organizational Studies. While pursuing his doctorate, Dr. Soehardjojo has conducted over 130 interviews with representatives of quasi-government agencies, advocates of sustainable development, business associations—and with various policymakers and formerly imprisoned union leaders. Through international research collaborations, he recently completed eight months of fieldwork covering Japan, China, Thailand, Myanmar and Indonesia (March-November 2019). Dr Soehardjojo is particularly open to international research collaborations, guest speaker invitations and a range of knowledge exchanges.
