This research examines police communications on social media through the utilisation of survey data, interview data and big social data. Methods used in this research are mixed but lean towards being more quantitative than qualitative. The research is interdisciplinary in scope and employs methods from both social science and computer science. The principal aim of this study is to understand how and why the police are using social media to engage and interact with their communities. While also, the study aims to advance knowledge regarding the novel methods used to further understand complex contemporary social phenomena through big social data.
