Caring for a growing, ageing population is a considerable societal challenge. One of the main reasons older adults have to be cared for is the often-rapid decline to their cognitive functioning, which can lead to dementia (Eshkoor et al., 2015).

Older adults of today are much more aware of the possible effects ageing has on cognition, possibly due to an increase in the availability of media addressing the issue of dementia. ‘Normal’ rates of cognitive decline may be attributed to the development of dementia in otherwise healthy adults. This worry about their health can be categorised as health anxiety, which the proposed research intends to focus on.

My research will explore the impact health anxiety can have on older adults, with the aim of identifying psychological and neurobiological factors that affect declining memory performance.
