I will be working on detecting trips and falls amongst dementia patients. Dementia is a term used to describe a group of symptoms related to a decline in memory and the ability to perform every day tasks. Patients with dementia represent an at risk group with limited manoeuvrability. They often have long term issues with posture and movement which lead to trips and falls. While these issues can be spotted by Doctors and Nurses, the overworked and understaffed nature of services for the elderly mean patients are often missed. In my project I will attempt to develop a system that can automate detection of posture and movement issues. This system will notify staff that there is an issue so that intervention to prevent trips and falls can occur. To achieve this I will make use of Machine Learning approaches and data collected both previously by my supervisor as well as data collected during the project.
