ESRC Wales DTP Capabilities & Careers Conference 2022: Methods for Critical Social Science

All day, Wednesday 27 April 2022 - Thursday 28 April 2022

In the following video John Harrington introduces the conference:

Our focus this year is on ‘Methods for Critical Social Science’, building on the work of our DTP community on exclusion and diversity in the wider society and in the academy.

We will be joined by leading academics, as well as post-doctoral and doctoral researchers, sharing their achievements and insights on methodology and research practice. Lectures and workshops will allow all our students to enhance their own skills and widen their approaches to social science research.

The conference will provide a lively engagement for all students, with topics, including race, gender and sexuality, disability, child health and educational inequality. Through seminars, lectures, and peer discussions, participants will have an opportunity to enrich their own work using critical methods, and to reflect on collaborating with the communities among whom and with whom they research.

We are honoured that the conference will be opened by Judge Ray Singh CBE, Chair of Race Council Cymru. Our distinguished keynote speaker will be Professor Sara Ryan, Oxford University, a pioneer of qualitative research methods on health and social care with a particular focus on learning disability and autism.

The conference will be accessible to students whatever the stage they have reached in their DTP journey, and whatever their topic or discipline. It includes sessions on working with ‘big data’, conducting  interviews with third object prompts, and using inclusive methodologies such as ethnography, participatory action research and co-production.

Student discussion sessions will provide the chance to share experiences with qualitative, quantitative and mixed-method research methods, and to learn lessons for achieving wider social impact with their research.

The conference concludes with a ‘townhall meeting’, where students will have a chance to reflect on their experiences as ESRC students and to contribute to the Wales DTP’s planning and work on equality, diversity and inclusion.

The conference will take place online on 27-28 April.  It is free of charge and is open to all Wales DTP students.  Full details are available in the Conference programme.
